Michael L. Kagan, Ph.D.
Editor of All Breathing Life
with Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi
Michael Kagan is an innovator both in technology and in Jewish spirituality. He independently developed a synthesis of midrash, halacha, Kabbalah and Hasidism together with his understanding of psychology and mysticism that he calls Holistic Judaism. The proof that this approach was an authentic voice of Judaism came when he met Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and realized that all that he had created had been developed by Reb Zalman twenty years earlier. Holistic Judaism calls for the creation of a personalized midrash to the Torah and the cycle of the liturgical year. A good introduction to this approach can be found in the popular Holistic Haggadah (Urim) and captured in the documentary film "Seasons of our Soul" (Throughline Productions).
Michael has pioneered an approach to understanding Ecology from a Jewish perspective inspired by the works of Daniel Quinn and the late R’ David Zeller. This resulted in the book The King’s Messenger (Albion-Andalus), 247 – The Secret of the Jews (People of the Books), and the creation of the Jewish Climate Initiative (now The Interfaith Center for Sustainable Development). His approach is that the Jewish people are a messenger people chosen to carry a critical message through history for the world and that now is the time to remember that message and hand it over.
Michael ‘received’ the spoken word that now appears as God’s Prayer (Albion-Andalus). It is a call by the Creator of the dire consequences of our environmental trashing of the planet. It is also a message of love that we will correct our mistakes and that religions contain the information how to do this.
Michael is also the co-creator of "The Dance of the Tree" (YouTube) together with Levi Ben-Shmuel which combines tai-chi-like movements and the sefirot into a meditative dance inspired by the Lurianic configuration for shaking the lulav.
Michael is also co-producer of "Tunnel of Hope", a documentary about the escape of 210 Jews via a 200 meter long tunnel from the Navahrodok work camp in 1943 - the last escapee being his father.
Over the years Michael has taught, given lectures, and led workshops all over the world. He has been an invited guest at Limmud, England in 1997 and 2011.
Michael Kagan was born in London in 1956 and has lived in Israel since 1977. He has a PhD in chemistry, published over twenty academic papers including two in Nature magazine, holds ten patents and, besides all the above, he has been involved as an innovator in the Israeli start-up scene for over 25 years. He has five children and 4 grandchildren. His wife is Rabbi Ruth Gan Kagan the founder, spiritual and musical director of Nava Tehila in Jerusalem.
